Greece calls on Europe to impose sanctions against Ankara

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Thursday that Turkey's recent actions indicate that there is no room for positive dialogue with it.

This came during an interview with his counterparts in the European Union during a video conference, according to the Greek newspaper "Kathimerni".

Dendias added that the European Union should be prepared to impose sanctions that would compel Turkey to submit, in line with international law.

He pointed out that Turkey ignored the European Union's proposal to improve relations, as Ankara had done the opposite by escalating illegal exploration operations on the Greek continental shelf in the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus.

He pointed to the strange behaviors committed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently in the former coastal resort of Varosha, North Cyprus, saying that this place is not a place for a picnic.

He described Erdogan's visit to Varosha as "an insult to all Cypriots" and a flagrant violation of the rules of the United Nations Security Council.

Last Sunday, the Turkish president visited the breakaway northern Cyprus to meet its newly elected leader, Arsen Tatar.

Erdogan attended a "picnic" in the disputed Varosha sea front along the United Nations buffer zone that has divided the island since the Turkish invasion of the north in 1974.

He expressed his rejection of plans to unify Cyprus, calling for negotiations on the basis of two separate states.
