Google Launches AI Tool to Simplify Terms for iPhone Users
Google has introduced a new AI-powered feature designed to help iPhone users better understand complex or confusing text on the internet. The "Simplify" feature, now available in the Google app on iOS, allows users to create an easier-to-understand version of any highlighted text—without leaving the current webpage.
The Simplify tool is built on Google’s Gemini AI model and was developed by Google Research to make technical terms more accessible without omitting essential details. For instance, Simplify can break down medical terms like "emphysema" (a condition that damages the air sacs in the lungs) and "fibrosis" (dense connective tissue or scarring that develops in response to injury) in reports and journals, sparing users the need to look up terms on a separate web page.
Google stated that, in testing, users found simplified versions "significantly more helpful than the original complex text." However, the company acknowledged the study’s limitations and emphasized the need for "ongoing vigilance" to monitor for potential errors.
The feature can be accessed in the Google app on iOS by selecting any text on a webpage and tapping the "Simplify" icon from the menu options. When asked whether the feature will come to Android or Chrome on desktop, Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz told The Verge, "We have nothing to announce at this time, but we’re always looking to bring helpful features to more of our products."
