UAE to Launch First Miniature Satellite with Eco-Friendly Propulsion System in 2026
Khalifa University of Science and Technology and the UAE Space Agency announced a significant milestone in space innovation with the development of the country’s first miniature satellite propulsion system. Designed, built, and tested entirely within the UAE, the system is tailored for 6U CubeSats and features a precise, environmentally friendly propulsion mechanism.
The project is part of the UAE’s Miniature Satellite Initiative, supported through a formal agreement between the UAE Space Agency and Khalifa University. It aims to demonstrate advanced orbital technology for missions in low Earth orbit. The initiative includes six university researchers and key collaborators from the space agency. The propulsion system has now entered its final experimental phase at the university's Small Satellite Lab.
Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, stated:
"Today, we celebrate a historic moment in the UAE’s space innovation journey. This strategic achievement reflects our commitment to sustainable space technologies and showcases the engineering capabilities of our national talents."
Professor Ibrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, said:
"The project aligns with the UAE’s vision to boost regional and local capabilities in the space sector. These advanced systems mark a turning point in our ability to independently verify complex and sustainable space technologies. Reaching the final trial stage highlights the university’s dedication to nurturing national talent and enhancing local infrastructure."
The propulsion unit will be integrated into a fully operational small satellite system, with the launch targeted for late 2026. The mission’s primary objective is to demonstrate in-orbit propulsion capabilities, including altitude control and orbital maneuvers.
