Integrated Transport Authority launches first regional trial of self-driving trucks in Abu Dhabi
The Integrated Transport Centre of the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi has launched a pilot project to operate self-driving trucks in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with Autotech, a global company specializing in the development of self-driving vehicle systems, and Abu Dhabi Ports, within the Khalifa Economic Zones – Abu Dhabi “KIZAD”.
This project is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region in the field of operating self-driving trucks for logistics and freight transport purposes, reflecting the expansion of smart transport systems applications to include various sectors of modern movement and transport.
The project aims to evaluate the operation of self-driving trucks within a specific industrial and logistical environment, where trial runs were conducted on dedicated routes within Kizad areas, in accordance with regulatory frameworks and approved operational standards that ensure the highest levels of safety and operational quality.
During 2025, the developer, under the supervision of the Integrated Transport Centre, worked to align AI-based autonomous driving systems with local road requirements and logistics transport needs, to ensure highly efficient and seamlessly operational journeys, while adhering to global safety standards and testing the technology’s readiness for operation in real-world environments
