Cyprus demands the European Union to impose sanctions against Turkey immediately

Cypriot Defense Minister Charalambos Petrides confirmed his country's concern about the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean in light of Turkish provocations.

The minister called on the European Union to show its solidarity through decisive measures and to take a decisive stance towards Ankara's violations.

Cyprus' Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said that Turkey is choosing to escalate tensions in Cyprus, calling for immediate imposition of EU sanctions.

Turkey's renewal of Naftex in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus indicates that European sanctions should start immediately.   The Turkish Naftex, which covers the region, expired, but was renewed at the end of last week until 12 October.
