Imprisonment is the fate of everyone who opposes Erdogan

American thinker Noam Chomsky called for the immediate release of the Turkish businessman and activist Osman Kavala, describing the accusations for which he is being tried as "trivial", stressing the necessity of "not tolerating criminal acts of state repression" in Turkey.

"The European Court of Human Rights has demanded his release," Chomsky said in a video posted on Tuesday. "Now we must all strongly support this demand. Kavala must be released immediately, and such criminal acts of state repression must not be tolerated."

Chomsky added, "Osman Kavala, whom I remember well from my visits to Turkey, is strong and passionate, a defender of human rights and justice ... He has been in prison for more than 1,000 days on petty charges."  On October 8, a Turkish court approved an indictment against Kavala accusing him of aiding in organizing the 2016 coup attempt, according to his lawyer, eight months after he was acquitted of charges of financing protests across Turkey in 2013.

In the new regulation, the Turkish authorities accused Kavala of collaborating with Henri Barki, a prominent Turkish researcher in the United States. The list confirmed that Barki is linked to the network of Fethullah Gulen, who resides in the United States, and whom the Turkish government accuses of being responsible for the failed coup attempt in July 2016.
