Liverpool squanders its lead and draws with Arsenal

Liverpool let a win slip from its grasp and had to settle for a 2-2 draw with visitors Arsenal on Sunday, in the headline clash of Matchday 36 of the English Premier League.

The first half at Anfield ended with Liverpool leading 2-0, thanks to goals from Dutchman Cody Gakpo and Colombian Luis Díaz in the 20th and 21st minutes, respectively.

In the second half, Arsenal capitalized on the home side’s drop in performance, with the London team scoring twice through Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli and Spaniard Mikel Merino in the 47th and 70th minutes.

Liverpool, who failed to win for the second consecutive match — ever since clinching their 20th league title this season — remain at the top of the table with 83 points.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s tally rose to 68 points in second place. However, they have not yet secured a spot in the top five that guarantees qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, as they are only 5 points ahead of fifth-placed Aston Villa, with two rounds remaining.
