UAE Joins Forces with Westinghouse to Support U.S. Nuclear Energy Expansion
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Westinghouse Electric Company have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Washington, D.C., to explore advanced nuclear energy cooperation in the United States.
Aligned with U.S. goals to quadruple nuclear energy output by 2050, the collaboration leverages ENEC’s global expertise in building and operating large-scale nuclear plants, such as the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, and Westinghouse’s leading AP1000® nuclear reactor technology.
The MoU outlines potential collaboration on deploying the fully licensed AP1000® reactors across the U.S., reviving paused projects, and developing business models for new nuclear energy ventures. It also includes joint efforts in fuel supply chains and long-term operation and maintenance services.
Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, emphasized that nuclear energy is crucial for clean, reliable baseload power to support rising energy demands and evolving tech sectors like AI. He noted that this partnership brings together two industry leaders to advance nuclear growth in a responsible and impactful way.
Westinghouse CEO Patrick Fragman added that the U.S. aims to build 10 new large reactors by 2030, and AP1000® is the only fully licensed, ready-to-build technology suited to meet this goal.
This collaboration supports ENEC’s broader strategy of expanding its global footprint, investing in clean energy technologies, and accelerating the deployment of safe, sustainable nuclear solutions worldwide.
