The Inter-Parliamentary Union adopts the UAE proposal to issue a resolution on strengthening maritime security and protecting maritime navigation.

The General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union adopted the proposal of the United Arab Emirates, submitted by the delegation of the Federal National Council, to issue a resolution entitled “Strengthening maritime security and protecting critical infrastructure in times of conflict: The role of parliaments in safeguarding international navigation and global economic stability,” during the meetings of the 152nd General Assembly of the Union held in Istanbul.

The General Assembly also approved the selection of His Excellency Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, Member of the Federal National Council, as rapporteur for the draft resolution to be adopted at the 154th Assembly of the Union, where His Excellency stressed that raising this issue stems from a clear understanding that contemporary conflicts are no longer confined within their immediate borders, but rather their effects extend to maritime routes, supply chains, energy facilities, and basic services, making it an issue directly related to international peace and security.

He explained that this topic addresses a very important issue, which is the protection of international navigation, the preservation of vital infrastructure, and the reduction of the broad economic and humanitarian repercussions resulting from the spread of conflicts beyond their immediate arenas, noting that when sea lanes are threatened, or ports are targeted, the impact is not limited to a particular country, but extends to the global economy, trade, energy security, the safety of supply chains, and the arrival of humanitarian aid.

He added that this issue gives parliaments a real opportunity to contribute to protecting international stability, safeguarding global economic interests, and enhancing the ability of states to confront the growing risks associated with contemporary conflicts.

His Excellency Dr. Marwan Al Muhairi stressed the importance of supporting this issue, because it does not serve the interest of a particular country, but rather expresses a common collective interest, and responds to an escalating international challenge that requires responsible and effective parliamentary action.
