Cyprus and Greece unite to face Turkey

The Cypriot Defense Minister, Charalambos Petrides, confirmed today, Wednesday, that sanctions against Turkey will remain on the table. He pointed out that Ankara's continued spreading of tension in the region is what exposes it to sanctions, according to the "Al Arabiya" network, in urgent news.

In another context, the newspaper "In-Cyprus" reported that the Cypriot President, Nikos Anastasiades, and the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had spoken by phone Tuesday evening in an attempt to coordinate work in light of the European Council meeting in December and the visit of the United Nations Special Envoy, Jane Hall Lot. To the divided island on November 30.

The Cypriot government issued an official statement today, Wednesday, stating that Anastasiades and Mitsotakis talked about the Cyprus problem, efforts made to resume talks brokered by the United Nations, the possibility of holding a "5-1" conference, as well as the ongoing Turkish provocations in the region.

The council meeting is scheduled to take place from 10-11 December, and EU leaders will assess the relations between Turkey and the European Union.

Lotte, the UN Secretary-General's envoy to the Cyprus problem, will hold separate meetings in Nicosia today, with President Anastasiades and the newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

After her meetings in Cyprus, Lotte is expected to visit Athens for meetings with the Greek government.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The last round of talks supported by the United Nations took place in the Swiss resort of Crans Montana, but did not produce any results.
