French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed, today, Thursday, that the leaders of the European Union will discuss today, at the Brussels summit, the Turkish file and the need not to prejudice the sovereignty of countries in the Mediterranean basin.
Macron expressed the leaders ’commitment to defending the sovereignty of the European Union and the stability of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The French President called on all European countries to be in line with their previous decisions and demands regarding Ankara.
Macron stressed that the summit will take measures on Turkey consistent with its decisions last October.
For his part, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell, said the summit would send a clear message to Turkey to protect the EU’s interests.
Borrell explained that Turkey’s treatment has not changed fundamentally but has become worse than before, and "we have to make decisions about Ankara."
The European Union foreign policy official added, "Our assessment is negative for Turkey's dealings in several files."
Today, Thursday, European Union leaders will agree to sanctions against Turkish individuals and entities over the energy exploration dispute with Greece and Cyprus, but they will postpone any tougher steps until March, according to a new draft statement for the summit.
