The United Arab Emirates has launched a bid to host a landmark United Nations climate change conference, seeking to distinguish itself as a global climate leader in a region still dominated by fossil fuels.
The UAE, one of the world’s largest producers of crude oil, is lobbying to host the Council of Parties (COP28) global climate summit in Abu Dhabi in November 2023. The event is held annually and brings together global leaders to deliberate climate policy.
The climate challenge is daunting, but it is also matched by enormous opportunity to drive economic growth and job creation, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement.
The UAE plans to increase its oil production capacity to more than 5 million barrels per day by 2030, and is constructing a coal fired power plant. Nevertheless, its pitch to host COP28 seeks to elevate its efforts to make climate action a pillar of its domestic and foreign policy and national economic strategy
