Within the framework of the UAE’s commitment to implement direct humanitarian projects in Afghanistan worth 184 million dirhams in order to build a more flexible and sustainable future for the Afghan people, Abu Dhabi supported the Birtaka Canal project (Helmand River Project - Gramsir region), which extends over 18 km, with the aim of achieving Better lives for more than 950 Afghan families and 350 farms using this water.

Helmand River flows in the main desert area of ​​the state, providing the water used for irrigation, and the area produces sugar beets, cotton, sesame, wheat, mung bean, corn, nuts, sunflowers, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, peanuts, apricots, grapes And watermelon, which are products that all need a project of the type of this huge project sponsored by the Emirates, and supported by its benevolent efforts, noting that the proportion of water flowing from the main Helmand River to the canal amounted to (383) m 3 / sec.


Thanks to the Emirati efforts, the sub-channels of the “Bertaka” channel deliver water to 300 farms, which contributed to reducing the expenses of farmers by 50 percent, who were using fuel water pumps to pump water from the Helmand River to some farms.
