From Princess Diana’s Enchantment to Georgina’s Boldness: One Dress Tells a Story of Rebellious Elegance Spanning 29 Years
Georgina Rodríguez sparked buzz during her debut appearance on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet, held in New York. She stunned in a black satin gown inspired by the historic look worn by the late Princess Diana in 1996 at the same event — Diana's first and only Met Gala appearance.
Georgina chose a silky, body-hugging dress that exuded refined simplicity, echoing the luxurious minimalism of Diana’s iconic gown, designed by John Galliano for Dior. Diana’s shimmering black dress remains etched in fashion history and was later exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2009 as part of its historic fashion collections.
Rodríguez entrusted the French label Vetements with designing her look, which featured similar lace detailing and elegant form. After the event, Vetements designer Guram Gvasalia shared details on Instagram about the inspiration and craftsmanship behind the unique gown.
He wrote:
"When Georgina asked me to design a gown for her first Met Gala, the first thing that came to mind was Princess Diana’s Galliano dress. With this year’s dress code being ‘Custom-Made for You,’ we began by deconstructing the linings of 10 jackets and coats, then redesigned them into lace-adorned evening dresses. We cut these dresses and fused them into a single hand-embroidered couture gown, adding the signature Vetements touch. Traditional menswear was transformed into a striking personalized creation."
He added:
"I wanted to give Georgina her royal moment. She is today’s princess of the people and queen of hearts. Not every dress has to be a fairytale — but this one..."
Georgina added a modern twist to the homage by opting for an elegant hairstyle and soft makeup that highlighted her strong features, accessorizing with dazzling diamond jewelry from Chopard, which added sparkle to the ensemble.
Her appearance was a stylish tribute to the Princess of Hearts and a salute to timeless fashion that transcends generations.
Despite the years between them, both gowns shared a common thread — the slip dress silhouette symbolizing simple elegance fused with strength and symbolism. Diana’s dress, designed by Galliano for Dior, was a bold move by a princess stepping away from royal constraints, reflecting a newfound confidence and graceful boldness not often seen in her earlier style.
Georgina, on the other hand, chose to honor that iconic moment with a modern reinterpretation that embraced today’s fashion trends. Whether it was a different sheen to the fabric or a reworked cut at the back or waist, the gown carried a personal flair that reflected her taste.
While Diana paired her dress with a legendary pearl-and-sapphire necklace for a regal touch, Georgina opted for dazzling diamonds from Chopard.
Even the hairstyles and makeup showcased the contrast between eras and styles — Diana with her classic short hair and refined makeup befitting a British royal, while Georgina went for a contemporary wet-hair look and bold makeup that highlighted her eyes and modern charm.
There’s no doubt that Diana’s look sent a message of personal empowerment and liberation after a challenging chapter in her life. Meanwhile, Georgina paid a graceful tribute to a timeless royal icon while affirming her own presence in the fashion world — a leading player capable of reimagining historical fashion symbols through her unique lens.
