Written in Her Own Hand in 1981: A Rare Private Letter from Princess Diana Revealed

Julien's Auctions is hosting a special exhibition titled "Princess Diana’s Style and Royal Collection", featuring a remarkable selection of the late Princess Diana’s personal belongings. The auction will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, offering fans of the British royal family and Princess Diana a rare glimpse into the personal and emotional side of the beloved princess.

The collection includes over 300 unique historical items such as fashion pieces, handwritten letters by Diana, and personal effects from her everyday life — making this one of the most extensive auctions of the late princess’s memorabilia.

Among the most significant and striking items is a handwritten letter dated July 31, 1981, just two days after her legendary wedding to Prince Charles. The letter was addressed to Mark Simpson, a servant at Buckingham Palace.

In this heartfelt note, Princess Diana expressed her true emotions as she transitioned suddenly from ordinary life to royal duties — a shift marked by isolation, challenges, and overwhelming change.

The letter includes touching words, where Diana thanked Mark for his support and kindness during her early days at the palace. She wrote:

> "I just wanted to thank you for all the kindness and patience you’ve shown me since I moved into Buckingham. You’ve made my stay so much easier thanks to your company — I was feeling so very lonely, and we laughed a lot, so I can only thank you."

She continued:

> "I hope you enjoyed Wednesday — did you like my dress? I’m traveling to Britain tomorrow with all those men. I’ll keep an eye on Evelyn! The bad news is I haven’t had any cereal. Sob. How will I cope without my cereal bowls?" — signing off with a smiley face emoji.

The letter provides a rare, intimate look into Diana’s early feelings of vulnerability and her candid sense of humor.

Experts estimate the letter will fetch $6,000 or more at auction.
