UAE’s Maritime Sector: A Global Powerhouse Anchored in Innovation and Sustainability

The UAE’s maritime sector stands as a cornerstone of its national economy, contributing over AED 135 billion and connecting to 106 global ports. This remarkable achievement is powered by robust investment in research and development, and a firm commitment to innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation.

From launching the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050, to building green infrastructure for supplying ships with low-sulfur fuels and natural gas, the UAE has positioned itself at the forefront of marine environmental stewardship. Its ports are investing in emissions reduction projects and have hosted high-profile events like COP28, reinforcing its climate commitment.

Digitally, the sector has taken a leap forward through initiatives like “Blue Pass” – a unified digital platform connecting shipping operators, ports, and suppliers. Automation of cargo handling and integrated digital transport systems have streamlined operations and reduced emissions.

On the international stage, the UAE has ratified 35 maritime instruments and contributed to shaping global standards, including autonomous ships and combating fraudulent ship registrations. Its academies have graduated nearly 500 officers and engineers, including 100 women – highlighting a strong push for gender equality. The UAE even proposed and secured approval for an IMO equality award, and currently leads the Arab Women in Maritime Association.

Looking ahead, the UAE will host the World Maritime Day Parallel Event in September 2025 under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity,” further cementing its role as a global maritime leader driving innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
