Turkey has continued, since last September, to transfer Syrian mercenaries to fight in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is the subject of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In the details, the source said that Ankara is transporting mercenaries from Syria to its lands first, and from there on direct commercial flights to Azerbaijan, at a rate of 100 militants per batch. According to this scenario, about 1500 militants have been recruited to date, and Ankara allocates money to each of them amounting to two thousand dollars a month, as financial inducements to persuade them to fight in the region.
The newspaper quoted in its report the testimonies of some mercenaries, who acknowledged the escape and return of dozens of them due to the escalation of fighting in Nagorny Karabakh. According to the newspaper, more than 200 other militants are demanding Turkey to return them immediately, after the high death toll among them. Other reports indicated the arrival of more than 70 bodies to their families in Syria, whose owners were killed in the ongoing battles in the region. An unknown number of bodies remain stuck in Azerbaijan, amid information indicating that the number of those killed so far reaches more than 120 people. The same accusations haunt Ankara in the Libyan file, as it drove thousands of Syrian mercenaries there to support the militant militias in Tripoli.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that Turkey, an ally of Azerbaijan, is still trying to recruit more Syrian mercenaries to fight in Nagorny Karabakh, but it is finding it very difficult.
