Manchester City Excludes Grealish from Club World Cup Squad
Winger Jack Grealish, who has lost his place at Manchester City for several months, was not included in the squad selected by the English club on Wednesday for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States (June 14 – July 13).
City manager Pep Guardiola benched the English international throughout much of last season, leading to the loss of his regular starting position. It has become increasingly evident that Grealish is no longer a key part of Guardiola’s plans.
With two years remaining on his contract, the club appears intent on selling him this summer, or, if that fails, loaning him out to another club.
In contrast, new signings—Algerian full-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, and French winger Rayan Cherki—have all been called up for the Club World Cup in the U.S.
Also included in the squad is Spanish midfielder Rodri, who recently returned to action at the end of last season after an eight-month absence due to a serious injury. Rodri was awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or for Best Player in the World.
Meanwhile, Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovačić will miss the tournament due to an Achilles tendon injury, which required surgery.
After winning the Premier League title a record four times in a row, City surrendered the crown to Liverpool but will compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
In the Club World Cup, City—winners of the last edition under its previous format—will face Morocco’s Wydad AC, UAE’s Al Ain, and Italy’s Juventus in Group G.
