Princess Diana’s “Caring Dress” Sells for Over Half a Million Dollars

A floral dress once worn by Princess Diana during hospital visits to children sold for $520,000 on Thursday at an auction in California featuring over 100 items from the late Princess's wardrobe.

Diana was seen wearing the dress publicly on several occasions between 1988 and 1992, including official visits to Spain and Nigeria. She referred to it as the "Caring Dress" because its bright colors were said to help comfort patients.

The auction, titled "Princess Diana’s Style and the Royal Collection", took place at The Peninsula Beverly Hills and showcased a wide range of Diana’s fashion items, including hats, handbags, shoes, as well as handwritten notes and sketches.

Auction house Julien’s described the event as the “largest collection” of the Princess’s fashion ever to be sold at auction.

The floral dress, designed by British luxury fashion house Bellville Sassoon, was one of ten items that fetched five-figure or higher bids. Other high-selling pieces included a cream silk evening gown and coat by Catherine Walker, each selling for $455,000.

A lambskin Dior handbag gifted to Princess Diana by former French First Lady Bernadette Chirac sold for $325,000, while a sleeveless blue dress by her close friend Gianni Versace brought in $227,500.

Two other notable sales were a yellow floral two-piece suit by Bruce Oldfield and a three-piece business suit by Escada, each going for $260,000.

Ahead of the auction, fashion designer Elizabeth Emanuel—who co-designed Diana’s wedding gown—said in a press release that she contributed archive pieces so they could be “loved and appreciated once again by those who will never forget the golden days when Diana was the Queen of our hearts.”
