UAE and Cuba Hold First Session of Joint Economic Committee: A New Era of Bilateral Cooperation
In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Cuba have held the first session of their Joint Economic Committee. The meeting, which marked a new chapter in economic collaboration, focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as food security, agriculture, tourism, and trade.
Advancing Agricultural and Food Security Collaboration
Both countries emphasized the importance of enhancing joint work in food security and agriculture. Discussions included increasing bilateral trade in food commodities and agricultural products, as well as identifying specific areas for future cooperation. These areas include sustainable agricultural practices, food processing, and agricultural technologies — vital sectors for both nations in light of global food security challenges.
Boosting Tourism and Cultural Exchange
Tourism was another central pillar of the discussions. The UAE and Cuba expressed mutual interest in organizing joint exhibitions, events, and tourism conferences aimed at promoting each country's historical and cultural landmarks. The two sides agreed to foster knowledge exchange in tourism resources, data collection and statistics, and the adoption of digital innovations in the tourism sector.
Growing Non-Oil Trade and Investment
The non-oil trade relationship between the UAE and Cuba continues to witness positive growth. In 2024, trade exceeded $39.1 million — an increase of over 2% compared to 2023, and 46.4% compared to 2022. Furthermore, during the first quarter of 2025, trade rose by 5.6% compared to the same period in 2024, and by over 25% compared to the last quarter of 2024.
The UAE's open and dynamic business environment has attracted more than 825 Cuban brands to its markets, reflecting Cuba’s growing interest in engaging with the UAE economy and leveraging opportunities for commercial expansion.
Looking Ahead
The successful conclusion of this first session of the Joint Economic Committee lays a strong foundation for an even deeper partnership between the UAE and Cuba. As both nations continue to identify new avenues for cooperation, this dialogue reinforces a shared commitment to sustainable development, economic diversification, and mutual prosperity.
