Sharjah Chamber and the Hong Kong Economic Office explore prospects for building new investment partnerships
The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry discussed with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade
Office in Dubai ways to develop economic and trade cooperation relations, prospects for building new investment partnerships, and mechanisms for mutual participation in economic events and specialized exhibitions, especially jewelry exhibitions.
This came during a working meeting held the day before yesterday at the Chamber’s headquarters between Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, Assistant Director General for Communication and Business at the Sharjah Chamber, and His Excellency Simon Chan, Director General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai.
This comes as part of the Chamber’s keenness to extend bridges of communication between the UAE business community and investors in Hong Kong, thereby expanding the scope of strategic partnerships and taking advantage of promising opportunities.
The meeting is a continuation of the ongoing cooperation and communication between the two sides, building on the results of previous meetings and joint initiatives that bilateral relations have witnessed during the past period, most notably the visit of a trade delegation headed by the Minister of Justice in Hong Kong to the Chamber in 2024, followed by a visit of a high-level business delegation that included 20 senior business leaders to explore investment opportunities and enhance cooperation in vital sectors that included investment, advanced manufacturing and advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, construction robots, energy, healthcare, real estate, financial services, and the trade of jewelry, diamonds and luxury watches.
Abdulaziz Al Shamsi affirmed that bilateral relations between Sharjah and Hong Kong are witnessing increasing momentum at the level of economic and investment partnerships, noting that cooperation has extended to include diverse fields, including international commercial arbitration through the cooperation launched by the Sharjah International Commercial Arbitration Centre “Tahkeem” with Hong Kong in May 2024 to exchange experiences on alternative means of dispute resolution, technology and innovation, in addition to cooperation in strategic fields, including renewable energy and e-commerce, which were reviewed during the Chamber’s meeting with the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce earlier.
Al Shamsi added that the Sharjah Chamber is keen to consolidate its partnerships with global financial and commercial centers, including Hong Kong, which represents a strategic gateway to Asian markets. He pointed out the attractiveness of the investment opportunities that the emirate offers to investors in various sectors, including gold, jewelry and precious stones. He emphasized the Chamber’s commitment to providing the necessary facilities for companies coming from Hong Kong to enter regional markets starting from Sharjah.
For its part, the delegation from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office praised the rapid economic development witnessed by the Emirate of Sharjah and the advanced infrastructure it provides to the business community, stressing the keenness for mutual cooperation with the Chamber in various economic fields and benefiting from Sharjah’s strategic geographical location, its free zones and its promising qualitative opportunities in the fields of manufacturing and regional and international trade.
The meeting explored strategic axes led by the exhibitions industry sector and discussed ways to facilitate and expand the participation of the business community and companies from Hong Kong in major events organized by Sharjah, most notably the "Middle East Watch and Jewellery Show" and the "Emirates Jewellery Show", as well as Emirati participation in exhibitions held in Hong Kong in light of its leadership in the jewelry industry and the trade of precious stones.
The meeting touched on cooperation with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and expanding the partnership so that it would be based in the Emirate of Sharjah. It also discussed mechanisms to activate joint cooperation to support the office to be a launching pad and gateway to attract Asian companies to work and invest in diverse economic and commercial activities and to benefit from the competitive advantages and advanced infrastructure provided by the Emirate of Sharjah as a leading economic center in the region.
