Isak’s Liverpool Move Nears Completion in Record Deal

Liverpool are on the verge of completing a record-breaking transfer for Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, with a long-term deal worth around £130 million ($175 million) set to be finalized before the transfer deadline.

Isak arrived in Liverpool on Monday morning to undergo a medical, just hours after Sky Sports and The Athletic reported that Newcastle had agreed to the player’s request to leave.

The drawn-out saga has dominated this summer’s Premier League transfer window. Liverpool’s earlier bid of £110 million was rejected in August, but negotiations ultimately paved the way for an agreement at a record figure.

At the same time, Newcastle moved quickly to secure a replacement, agreeing a £55 million deal for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who had long been their top target once Isak made clear his desire to join Liverpool.

Isak was instrumental last season, scoring 23 league goals to fire Newcastle back into the Champions League with a fifth-place finish. He also scored in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, securing the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years.

However, tensions had been mounting. Isak trained separately from the squad during preseason and accused Newcastle of breaking promises and misleading supporters in a strongly worded statement, insisting that a transfer was “in everyone’s best interest.”

Meanwhile, Brentford striker Wissa, 28, who has 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances, publicly urged his club to let him join Newcastle. His medical is expected to take place later today.

Liverpool also strengthened their defense, reaching a £35 million agreement with Crystal Palace for Marc Guéhi, the 25-year-old England international center-back. Guéhi impressed last weekend by scoring in Palace’s 3–0 victory over Aston Villa.

If both Isak and Guéhi’s transfers are confirmed, Liverpool will complete a formidable double signing—taking their total spending this summer close to £500 million.
